What to wear under
white lace and eyelet.

The layer underneath decides whether a white dress reads effortless or fussy. Here is what disappears, and what does not.

White is unforgiving, and openwork is more unforgiving still. Eyelet is built from holes: light travels through it, and so does the outline of whatever sits beneath. Most of the time a white dress looks wrong not because of the dress, but because of the layer chosen in a hurry that morning.

Choose Beige Over White

White underthings glow under white fabric — they read as a brighter, harder shape against the softer white of the dress. A tone matched to your skin disappears instead. It is the oldest rule in the book and still the one most often broken.

Check the Lining Before You Add a Slip

A well-made eyelet dress is already lined to the hem in soft cotton or a cotton blend. If it is, you do not need a slip at all — only the right bra and seamless briefs. Adding a second layer over a good lining is what makes a light dress hang heavy.

When You Do Need a Slip, Buy Petite

A regular-length slip under a petite midi will peek below the hem or bunch at the knee. Look for a slip that ends two to three inches above the dress hem, with adjustable straps so the neckline sits below a deep V.

Seamless, Not Shapewear

Eyelet and open lace show every edge. Laser-cut or bonded-edge briefs and a smooth T-shirt bra sit flat under cutwork; heavy compression shapewear creates ridges the openwork frames rather than hides. If the dress has a fitted waistband, keep the layer beneath it single and thin.

Bras for a Deep V

A plunge or a low-center-gore bra keeps the band hidden under a V that drops past the bust line. For thinner straps, a convertible bra with a racerback clip is far more secure than adhesive cups, which lose their hold in summer heat.

Test It in Daylight

Fitting-room lighting is flattering and dishonest. Stand near a window, or step outside for ten seconds, before you decide a layer is invisible. Bright sun behind an unlined skirt reveals things fluorescent light never will.

The short version: skin-tone, seamless, and only one layer. If the dress is properly lined, that layer is simply your usual underthings in the right colour. Everything else is a workaround for a dress that was not finished well.
